In all fairness

Vibha Chibber feels acting is not skin deep

Gritty Vibha Chibber

After Chak De India’s success, the media’s entire focus has been on girls and the coach, but few have written about Vibha Chibber who played the assistant coach to Shah Rukh Khan in the film.

A graduate from National School Drama, Vibha has been a known name in the theatre circuit.

“I believe a section of the media goes by the face value. Actors should be judged on the basis of acting skills and body language,” says Vibha, now playing the central role of a prejudiced mother in Bidaai on Star Plus, who doesn’t like her adopted daughter because she is fairer than her own daughter.

“Terms like dusky beauty have found acceptance only in elite circles, in the middle class families of small towns the colour of skin is still a criterion for selecting brides. So I won’t call Kaushalya a negative character. It brings out the pain of a mother in a subtle manner.”

Talking about her personal experience, Vibha says her grandmother was very fair.

“I used to hear similar comments from the neighbourhood, as my daughter faces in the serial. Thank God, my family has had a progressive mind set. When I was young I was into sports and then moved into theatre.”

Vibha will soon be seen in Saawariya.

“It’s a small but challenging role.”
