Call of the falls

The Shivasamudram Falls are known for their wild beauty

Picturesque Falls The water of Kaveri at Shivsamudram

Karnataka is famous for its falls and the twin falls of Shivasamudram attract tourists in plenty. After a season of good rains the falls are in fine form.

Situated in Mandya district, about 120 km from Bangalore, and easily accessible one has to drive down Mysore road to reach the falls. After crossing Maddur turn left towards Malavalli. Malavalli is the site of the famous MTR or Malavalli Tiffin Room products and it was here that in 1799 Tipu Sultan’s forces lost to the British.

After travelling a few kilometres beyond the board proclaiming the Shimsa Hydro Electric Project you will reach the Shivasamudram bus stand. Take the left turn to the falls. Trees surround the narrow road and the area abounds with ancient temples in a rural setting. The Madhyaranganatha swamy temple is dedicated to lord Vishnu. The temple was built by the Hoysalas and according to legend lord Indra, did penance here. The beautiful Someswara temple dedicated to lord Shiva has an attractive Nandi statue.

The Gaganachukki falls is another two kilometres from here and you need to cross the dargah of the Sufi saint Syed Mardhani Gayeb to see it. The cascading falls of Gaganachukki spread across a large area in some places falls from a height of 100 feet.

The Barachukki falls about a kilometre from here and is a combination of many small and big streams. The falls fall from a height of 250 feet and form a spectacular sight. From here you can see why the falls are famous and known for the lush greenery and soothing scenery that surround the falls.

TIPS: Shivanasamudram is 120 km and 40 km from Bangalore and Maddur respectively. Buses to Kollegal or Chamrajnagar stop here. The falls are about 4 km from here. The distance from Mysore is 65 km. Maddur, is also the nearest railhead.

Those wishing to stay the night can stay at the guest house run by the hydroelectric project. The Bheemeswari and Doddamakali fishing camps, about 30 km from the falls and run by the jungle lodge and resorts, are managed by Karnataka Tourism.
