Timely care counts

Vaccination protects cats against diseases

PROMPT ATTENTION Keeps your cat healthy

Vaccinations play a pivotal role in a cat’s health and well-being. Vaccines are given to prepare the body’s immune system against invasion by a particular disease-causing organism. The age and health of the cat is an important determinant in the choice of vaccines. For the vaccines to be effective, the cat or kitten should be in good health.

Consult your vet

Cats suffer from many fatal diseases. It is important that a cat is protected by following a timely and proper vaccination schedule. All vaccinations should be administered after consultation with your veterinarian. Have your cat examined by a veterinarian at least once a year, semi-annually if your cat is a senior cat.

Vaccinations should not be given to pregnant animals, but most vaccinations are safe for nursing animals. To offer maximum protection to the kittens, it is best to vaccinate the mother a few weeks before she becomes pregnant. Nursing kittens are protected by antibodies they get from their mother’s milk.

Vaccinations for kittens should begin as early as when they are 8 weeks old. (Please refer to the vaccination schedule given below).

The following are commonly administered vaccines for cats —

Feline Panleukopenia Virus Vaccine: Feline Panleukopenia is caused by feline parvovirus and is commonly known as feline distemper.

It is a highly contagious and deadly disease in cats. Feline panleukopenia virus is extremely hardy and can survive extremes of temperature and humidity for many months. Vaccination against feline distemper is recommended for all cats.

Feline viral rhinotracheitis (feline herpes virus) and feline alicivirus account for up to 90 per cent of all cases of infectious upper respiratory diseases in cats. Most cats are exposed to either or both of these viruses at some time in their lives. Once infected, these cats never get rid of the virus completely. These carrier cats continue to shed the organism for long periods of time and are also likely to infect other cats. Vaccination against these viruses is strongly advised.

This vaccine, known as FVRC, is a combination vaccine, called a bivalent vaccine. It is frequently combined with feline distemper and referred to as trivalent vaccine called FVRCP.

Rabies virus: Rabies is transmitted mainly through bite wounds of other infected animals. This vaccine is also highly recommended.

This month’s winner is Kalamegham, from Abhiramapuram, who rescued a Labrador from the street, despite already having a pet dog. The rescued dog, which appeared to have been separated from its owner, was bruised and in poor health. Kalamegham, with the help of his vet, nursed it back to health and after a tireless search for the dog’s owner, found a loving family to adopt it.
