Helpful in many ways

Man is a social animal. Only hermits can lead a life of solitude.

It is a curse for old people to live alone as their near and dear neglect them. Man has always made friendship with dogs, cats, parrots, etc. Among all the pets, dogs are considered to be the most friendly and faithful.

Given proper training, dogs can do minor things like getting newspapers or letters. Sniffer dogs are helpful in detecting crimes. In Panchatantra, there is a story of a lion and a rat, telling how the rat comes to the rescue of the lion by getting him free from a net.
