Eves to the fore Exuding confidence the girls were a combination of beauty and brains
Temperatures soared; loud cheers rent the air as young Teresians vied with one another for the coveted Miss Teresian crown. An event that capped the week long talent competitions of both the literary and of the physique had girl power at its best. A
wonderful amalgamation of teachers and students gathered and cheered the beauty of woman hood. “This year we had reworked the dynamics a little as we began our festivities with competition based on Sister Teresa our holy patron, who lived an austere life in the 16th century. It is based on this exemplary model that we choose to impart ethics and values to our girls here,” said Sr Christabel, Principal of St. Teresa’s college. It was pretty clear from the beginning that this wasn’t a mere show of loveliness. On the contrary girls from various departments proved their mettle on merit.
Compering
The compere whipped up the crowd to enjoy this fabulous event, even more as Miss Teresian was not just a doll; she had to embody the spirit and power that is behind every Teresian.
The first round started with 19 contestants launching into a short portrayal about themselves. It was indeed appreciable that some of them chose to speak in chaste Malayalam a language that youngsters find hard to speak today. Simple, vociferous, homely, optimistic and above all confidence can perhaps be the sum total of all the contestants, who were attired in their ‘desi’ best.
At the end of the second round there were 15 contestants. This round had girls answer the common question about the personality they admired the most and why. Two of the most common personas were their mothers and the new age media queen Oprah Winfrey.
While the girls were being judged a sassy young girl walked with the longest earring that extended way past her shoulders, making you wonder whether they do make them that long in the first place. There were contenders for the funniest hair color as well. Actor Cuckoo Parmeshwaran handed out fun prizes and did a great job in revving up the crowd.
Sixty Seconds to Fame was on the cards next where girls drew on their talents. Some of them recited poetry, while others proved that the sari was not a hindrance when it came to quick boogey. Ranjini Jose a popular playback singer and a former student of St Teresa’s pepped up the crowd with catchy songs. The final round was the question round where the girls had to offer witty yet intelligent repartees. Ambili Abraham crowned second runner, stood her ground when she said that it was love or rather the lack of it that was the root cause of all social evils including terrorism.
Dream big
Rhea John, first runner up felt that she was able to dream big because she was confident and bold enough to voice her thoughts no matter what the situation be.
However, it was Wayalana Shahnaz Jabbir who walked away with the crown with her measured and mature opinion that the best gift a woman should enjoy and experience is motherhood and that if other women choose to help others by offering their wombs it is the most beautiful act.
The winners of the other titles were Miss Beautiful Smile-Sonia, Ambili Abraham- Miss Congeniality-Wayalana Shahnaz Jabbir-Miss Best Dressed and Miss Beautiful Hair, Rupa John- Miss Talented.
TV personality, Annie Philip, a former Navy Queen, Deepa Verma, Shoba Kunjan, a beautician, Miss Kerala 2007- Rohini Mariam Idicula and CEO of 94.3 FM, Srinath were the judges for the event. The event was girl power at its best.
