Music sans borders

Mario Canonge waltzes through various genres of music with ease

VERSATILE Mario Canonge

Mario Canonge is as versatile a pianist as they can get. His thickset yet nimble fingers run across the keys bringing to life a music that blends the history of jazz with the liveliness of the Caribbean. “My music comes from an urge to create, it is not pre-planned,” says Mario, described as a musician for all seasons. He waltzes through Caribbean, Jazz, Latin American and African music with l ease.

Mario’s roots lie in Martinique, a French island in the Caribbean steeped in musical traditions. He took to the piano at an early age and proved to be a natural. He imbibed ‘beguine,’ the traditional music of Martinique and ‘gwo ka’ from the nearby Guadeloupe and several strands of Caribbean music, along with the jazz music that came over the radio from across the sea. The music that he has been creating for the last 20 years is an ebb and flow of these various streams of influence.

Mario has brought out several albums of his unique brand of music. His latest album is ‘Rhizome,’ a dedication to the intricate web of different strands that forms his version of global music.

For Mario, creating music is an urgent need that has to be fulfilled. He is known to record entire albums in a matter of two or three days. “Like a man building a house I plan only the basic structure, the decorations comes at the last minute,” says Mario who performed recently in Thiruvananthapuram.
