Law and fiction- a potent combination

Launch A 23-year old gets creative in her first book

Amrita Suresh

She says she wants to give a profound answer to the question, ‘Why this book?’ “I thought I’d say something philosophical and expected like ‘I was inspired by Leo Tolstoy,’” she says cheekily, a mood that fea tures predominantly throughout her book, “but the truth is far from that. I just wrote when I wanted to and wanted to put my thoughts and moods down on paper. I would struggle to write 14 pages, but soon realised I had 1400 pages in hand! When Rabindranath Tagore was asked why he started Shantiniketan there was no calculated motive. The fact was that he wanted something very different from his own school.

Amrita Suresh’s first book -When a Lawyer Falls in Love…!! is not what Amrita would call her first attempt at writing. She has won many prizes for writing essays and poems, but this is her first attempt at dealing with publishing houses and getting her work published.

The book is about a law student, his life at law school and his many hopeless attempts at wooing the girl he fancies. Many of the situations in the book have been adapted from real life situations that the author has witnessed or has had first hand experience of. When she was wrote the book and was looking for feedback, Amrita sent across a few chapters to friends at Cornell University, IIT and ISB, all of whom gave her a positive feedback, something that motivated her to go ahead with publishing the manuscript.

After her schooling at St Ann’s High School, Secunderabad, Amrita moved on to St Francis Degree College and then did her post graduate in Literature from CIEFL (Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages). She is currently studying M.Phil in English from Hyderabad Central University.

But it’s her in-depth knowledge of law and use of law terminology that has many people believing that she’s actually a law student- an acknowledgement that gives the 23-year-old writer a big high. The book has a passing mention of many of the author’s interests including regression therapy and zodiac signs. Launched in Hyderabad last week, the book is available at leading book shops.

If the vibes of a nation can be judged by its demographics under the age of 25 then going by Amrita’s book, ours is spunky, fun, witty, intelligent and go-getting nation!
