My Kind of Place - CHINMAYI
Standing tall
There is silence in music that is why it touches the soul. The same goes for the mountains. Higher the altitude, the more you are away from the madding crowd and at peace with yourself. I have always been fascinated by the Himalayas and dream of climbing its peaks someday. Whenever I am reminded of my trip to Switzerland, nothing but the Alps comes to mind. Oh! Those pristine, white mountains, you just cannot take your eyes off them.
No chilling out
I do travel a lot for shows but there’s hardly any time for sightseeing. Rehearsals and sound checks… our itinerary is usually hectic. Yet there are times when one is tempted to look around, particularly when the place you are visiting is picturesque. For instance, when I had gone to the Jammu All India Radio, I realised how apt the term “heavenly” (zameen par jannat) is to describe Jammu and Kashmir. If it’s Nature’s glory in Jammu and Kashmir, it’s history and heritage in the colourful sands of Rajasthan. More than the palaces, food and clothes I was completely fascinated by the folk tunes. I heard a folk musician playing the unique Ravantar and thought it sounded great.
On a song
Speak of having fun while on the go, a huge team of singers and members of the orchestra accompanied maestro Ilayaraja to Italy. Pritam Singh’s (music composer) daughter Preeti was so taken in by the silence on the streets that she started singing loudly. It embarrassed me and pleaded with her to lower her pitch. But she was on a song.
