Car and bike questions? We have the answers

I want to buy a new car. I have short-listed the Swift, Getz, Xing and Estilo. Which of these should I buy and why?

Rakesh Kumar

You should have listed your requirements for us to answer better. Anyway the competition is between Getz and Swift and between Xing and Estilo. Between Xing and Estilo, the Xing wins hands down. It is better put together, has better dynamics and more spacious as well. Between Getz and Swift, the Swift comes cheaper but you may lose out on build quality, gain on fuel efficiency and performance. If you choose the Getz, you may lose out on performance and it retails for a higher price as well. But if you have to choose, the Getz is a better overall package than the Swift.

I have a Santro and want to buy a new car. My budget is Rs 5 lakh. I want a car that is fuel efficient, has good pick-up, enough cabin space and is easy to drive on city roads. I can’t decide between the Swift a nd Getz. I like the way the Getz looks but I notice a lot of Swifts on the road. Is there something wrong with the Getz? Should I go for one of the two or just stick to the Santro?

Mohan

No, there is nothing wrong with the Getz. The reason you see less of Getz is due to the higher price tag. Overall, the Getz is a better package. You are a Hyundai customer already, and a happy one at that, we assume. Stick to the Getz.

I want to buy a car with good mileage and great pick-up. My budget is around Rs 4 lakh -5 lakh. I have short-listed the Swift and Santro. Which would suit me better?

Mohan P V K

If you want petrol, go for the Swift. It’s got better performance than the Santro and the fuel efficiencies of both cars are comparable. If you are looking for diesel, then you don’t have much choice except the Indica. Its turbo is the best of the lot.

I have a family of five including me and I want to buy a new petrol car. My budget is Rs. 4 lakh -5 lakh. I have short-listed the Chevrolet Aveo U-VA and Zen Estilo. In terms of fuel efficiency, mileage and low mainte nance costs, which is a better car?

Saritha

For your requirements, the U-VA suits you better primarily because of space. The Estilo is not going to be as comfortable as the U-VA for five people. The Estilo however, will give you better fuel efficiency. There’s no doubt that the U-VA is a much better car than the Estilo.

I want to know if petrol with additives is better than unleaded petrol for the engine. I have a Santro and have driven it for 2,500km. I have used unleaded petrol. Are fuels with additives good only for the environmen t or do they help the engine as well?

U S Varadharajan

Fuel additives work best on older engines. They help to clean up carbon and other muck which has collected over years. On a new engine however, it will make only negligible difference. Stick to the recommendations given in the owner’s manual.
