I have been posing for pictures since morning,” says a weary Queenie Dhody as she sheepishly agrees for yet another round of flashlights. The former model and jewellery designer was in the Capital to showcase her “Jewels by Queenie” collection at the store Samsaara.
Keeping aside the cup of coffee, Queenie gingerly gets up from the comforts of a leather chair, fits in her glittering golden shoes and gets ready for a chat. On show at Samsaara this past week was her collection of chunky jewellery done in precious and semi-precious stone and gold. Socialites flitted in and out checking out her neckpieces, dangling earrings, bracelets and bangles.
“Gold is in,” says Queenie pointing to her collection in beaten gold. Queenie began her jewellery journey about four years back, “I have always loved jewellery and I like my jewellery to make a statement,” she says. “My jewellery is loud. It exudes elegance and importance. It is enough to make a statement. It tells a woman apart,” declares Queenie.
But she agrees her elaborate neck pieces and chandelier ear rings are not for the working women. “The jewellery is not for the working woman, at least it is not for work. These are bold pieces and give women individuality and confidence,” says the style icon.
Queenie has been synonymous with style for long and on her foray to jewellery designing, she says, “Jewellery is an adornment on women. The kind of jewellery, like the shoes you wear, determines your style.” Once a well-known model Queenie believes the fashion industry in India is growing by “leaps and bounds.” But with fashion designers mushrooming from every nook and corner, Queenie feels there is a need to set some standards. “There is too much of fashion today. So there should be a distinction between the good and the bad,” she winds up.
