Theatre awards

The Mahindra Group will give away the Third Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards (META) for the third consecutive year. The awards are scheduled to be announced on March 7, 2008.

“This year, I have travelled to the emerging metros such as Patna, Lucknow, Pune, Chandigarh and Ahmedabad to extend the scope of META,” said Ravi Dubey, Creative Director, META, at an event held in New Delhi to invite entries for the award. Applications are invited from all over the country for productions in English, Hindi and regional languages. A selection committee will review the productionsand choose the finalists in January, 2008. The applications are open till December 31, 2007. The selection committeewill eventually pick 10 productions and they will perform in Delhi during the Mahindra Theatre Festival in the first week of March, 2008.

Speaking on the occasion, Dubey felt, “ In India, theatre is on the way towards revival. Sadly, however, the same people who are willing to pay 40 pounds for a play in London are unwilling to shell out 200 rupees in India.” Taking part in the event, actress Neena Gupta said, “Theatre provides satisfaction on the creative front but there is not much money to be made in this profession. The Government does a few things here and there but Delhi does not have a strong Hindi theatre culture.” Responding to this, Dubey added, “We hope to create an academy for excellence in theatre in the long run.”
