Grilling the menu
Oriental cuisine for the past years has made its presence felt in a big way in the country. The latest addition is the Bonsai Garden at Connaught Place in the Capital. The restaurant offers Indonesian, Thai and Japanese cuisines. A venture of the Co
rus hotel, Global Teppanyaki food festival recently concluded here.
Teppanyaki is a combination of two Japanese words. Teppan means table and yaki means grilling. The highlight of the festival is an open kitchen where the chef cooks the dishes in front of the guests.
The method is Japanese however the style of open kitchen is a western innovation. When an order is placed Chef Vijay takes his place at his work station and onlookers can see their food being prepared in front of their eyes. He says, “As it is an open kitchen hygiene and entertainment are ensured.” A personal fan of Japanese food, Vijay says that Japanese cuisine is rich in protein. It lacks spices so it is healthier than most cuisines, including Indian. Mostly Japanese sauces and seasoning are used. The freshness of the vegetables and meat is a top priority for the restaurant. The food is usually half done to conserve vitamins, a must in Japanese food.
The preferred dish is the grilled fish with lemon.
The ambience of the restaurant has been designed by Sumit Nag who has added a traditional sitting area. Most of the guests prefer to dine there. A rich collection of liquor adds to the finesse of the restaurant.
In the coming months more festivals are going to be organised . A meal for two would cost at least Rs.1200.
