‘It’s not an ad-hoc jam session’

The four musicians on their coming together

Vinayakram I’ve always enjoyed playing with Trilok. With his family background in music, he plays the tabla with authentic Indian rhythms. But with jazz he becomes a jazz musician, and plays African drums like an African born. He can adapt himself to any style, be at home in any team. We are determined to do something unique this time in Chennai, especially as we are joined by Prasanna for the first time.

Trilok Gurtu

Humble, gentle, Vikku is one of the greatest percussionists in India. The many concerts we’ve done have all been big hits. I know Selva Ganesh but not Prasanna. We’ll make this team work. This won’t be some ad hoc jam session. We’re going to rehearse for two days and do something splendid. It won’t be competitive, it will be true collaboration. The rhythmic values of Carnatic music have been recognised the world over. I want to go deeper into this. I’m an admirer of Palghat Raghu. He helped me a lot. He told me that to play difficult stuff, you have to make it sound simple. Finally all music has to be spiritual. My satguru takes care of me and my playing. Prasanna

I approach this concert like a poet interacting with three painters. I paint with words, they speak with colours. I feel a comfort zone with Vinayakram, Selva Ganesh (I’ve played often with them) and Trilok Gurtu whom I respect. I expect to have a wide-ranging melodic, harmonic and rhythmic conversation with these three great percussionists. To me Carnatic music is a philosophy to draw a lot from in learning and interpreting other styles of music. I don’t make distinctions between fusion and other genres.

Selvaganesh

I’m looking forward to this show. I know that all we have to do is to meet, and we will catch fire. What joy to do that before a discerning audience!
