Science is fun

The article (Science made easy, Nov. 2) explained how simple experiments alone can help children ’apply’ their minds.

I would rate these higher than the experiments taught in science labs in school where the student’ inquisitiveness is curtailed. Teaching science achieves its true purpose only when children ask ’WHY’ and ’WHY NOT’. The surprising fact is that they will then often find the answers themselves!

Sweet problem

(Surviving Deepavali, Metroplus Nov. 8). I wish I had been educated earlier about the harmful consequences of eating too many sweets! Too many laddoos and mysorepaks have made me diabetic.

Remember when… (Nov. 5) was nostalgic. Thanks to westernisation traditional practices are disappearing. Shampoo snaanam has replaced ennai snaanam, antacids have taken over from lehiyam, and of course home-made sweets have been replaced by shop-bought ones.
