At the last count there were approximately 336 television channels in India in various languages. Tonight at 9, yet another General Entertainment Channel (GEC) in Hindi, 9X will be launched. The television and advertising industries in the country ea gerly wait to find out whether the new channel will make a mark in the cluttered Hindi GEC market. 9X is being promoted by Peter and his wife Indrani Mukerjee of INX Media. Peter who? Well it is Peter Mukerjee, formerly of Star TV, the man who made Star Plus, India’s biggest GEC brand, with his smart programming and packaging. Ekta Kapoor and her Balaji Telefilms will produce two dramas, “Kahe Naa Kahe”, and “Kya Dill Mein Hai”, and Smriti Irani’s Ugraya Entertainment, “Mere Apne.” Smriti’s serial also marks the television debut of former star Vinod Khanna, who rose to fame in the early 1970s with a film bearing the same title! Similarly, veteran actor Tanuja will star in the comedy serial “Babban Bhai vs Bimala Tai.” Siddhartha Basu’s Synergy Adlabs is making its debut in fiction programming with a romantic daily drama, “Jiya Jale”. 9X is all set to pull off a coup by doing a reality musical show “Mission Ustaad”, which marks music maestro A.R. Rahman’s debut in Hindi television.
