Bond of friendship

Celebrating the success of ‘Chocolate’ are Roma, Samvritha and Ramya who lit up the screen with their bubbly portrayal of three college buddies, writes Sangeeta

Triumphant three Roma, Samvritha and Ramya

“It is perhaps the biggest hit of our careers. The film brought us visibility, commercial success and critical acclaim. But most of all, it helped us meet and spend time with each other. So we celebrate the film that made us thick friends,” chorus the ‘Chocolate trio’ Ramya, Roma and Samvritha.

The boisterously merry actors lit up the film with their zestful portrayal of college buddies.

“In fact, we are college buddies in real life as well. Samvritha and I went to the same college. We graduated in Communicative English from St. Teresa’s College, Kochi,” says Ramya Nambisan, who appears as Susan in the film.

New look

“The role is special because it helped me shed the typical, village girl kind of image I had. It was contemporary not only in terms of looks but also in terms of attitude. Susan is different from all my previous roles,” says the actor.

Samvritha as a timid Nandana weaves in the emotional drama in the second half of the film.

“Nandana, at one point of time, loses her trust in her friend and moves away from the gang. The sequences that follow make her realise her mistake. Gradually, Nandana falls in love with Jayasurya’s character,” narrates Samvritha, who is now working on Rajasenan’s ‘Romeo.’ Although Roma’s Ann makes us recall her character, Maria, in her debut film, ‘Notebook,’ Roma asserts that Ann is 10 times more tomboyish than Maria.

“The basic difference is that Ann is a college girl. She is definitely more informed and assertive than Maria. This film also gave me the scope to work on subtle emotions. Ann is in love with Shyam, but is a bit unsure and shy about it. On the look of it, she appears bold and unconventional, but actually she is very emotional and sensitive,” explains Roma.

‘“Entharu Chellakili...’ is my favourite line these days. It is difficult to get out of certain roles, especially when you have real good memories associated with it. Working in ‘Chocolate’ was such fun – it was like reliving my short lived college days in Ethiraj College for Women, Chennai. I was lucky to work in two campus-based films. My co-stars in ‘Notebook’ and ‘Chocolate’ top my friends’ list,” says the happy star-in-the-making Roma.

The film industry is a place where one seldom gets the opportunity to make good friends, especially, in such a short span of time, feels Samvritha.

“Primarily because the pace is maddening. You might get to speak to your co-star during shoots but you hardly get the time to become friends. And there is no need for that. You build a professional relationship, work and go away. Nobody has the time to build friendships.” Fortunately, the trio got to spend some quality time together during the shoot of ‘Chocolate.’

“There was a strike during one of the schedules and it went on for about a week. So we decided to take a trip to Samvritha’s place in Kannur and then to Kollur. It was a wonderful journey – we had Ramya’s parents and my mother accompanying us. They too, are pals now,” remarks Roma.

A contemplative Ramya says she is suprised at the turn of events.

Classmates

“I knew Samvritha from college. It was just a ‘hi-bye’ relationship then. We never thought beyond that. We were in the same class and endured boring lectures together... You know, you see somebody on a daily basis but never bother to think about that person. It was something like that. Now I realise how genuine a person Samvritha is. Now, there is the disappointment that we did not become friends then. But well, everything is pre destined. May be life was waiting for Roma to come in...,” she concludes.
