It was all smiles for children of Marion Play Home at The Muthoot Plaza on Children’s Day. A school for the mentally challenged, the students of Marion were treated to a day of fun courtesy SMILES, a corporate social responsibility group compri
sing employees of The Muthoot Plaza.
Dressed in their school uniform, the students of Marion Play Home were all on high spirits. Chatter and giggles filled the hall of the hotel as they waited patiently for the events to begin. A magic show by Preeth soon caught their attention. Though it was polite applause at first, Preeth soon had the audience clapping enthusiastically with his mime and magic.
A little boy was seen trying to imitate a cloth trick that was being demonstrated by the magician. Snack boxes which were passed around during the show had the kids merrily munching on samosas and cup cakes.
Magic trick
A couple of students were given the opportunity to partake in a magic trick or two. One boy from the school, however, wanted a bit of attention for himself and crept up on to the stage. Unfortunately his time under the limelight was short-lived as his teacher sternly took him off the stage.
A slide show depicted the work SMILES has done at the Marion Play Home. “We donated some money to support the Christmas celebrations at the school and cricketer Sreesanth dropped by the school this February to spend a day with the students. He was sporting enough to play a round of cricket with the kids. We also enjoyed an Onam sadhya with the kids at their school,” says Ghulam Samdani, general manager and area director (South), The Muthoot Plaza.
Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy was the guest of honour for the event. After cutting a cake to mark the first anniversary of the formation of SMILES, the students put up a dance performance. Well choreographed, the dance had the students keeping time to a melange of Malayalam songs without once missing a beat.
A fashion show by the students followed by a sumptuous lunch brought the programme to a close. Special SMILES bags were given to the children as gifts. As they trooped out it, the smiles on their faces said a thousand words.
