Get it right At Corporate Quiz 2007

They were the pride of corporates and B-schools. But, of late, they’ve entered the portals of schools – it’s business quiz we are talking about.

Corporate Quiz – 2007, organised by the Coimbatore chapter of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India, was for students in Classes XI and XII.

Out of 37 teams from 17 schools, six were to move into the finals. Tough job! But trust Coimbatore’s famous quizmaster M. Rangarajan to make it easy and interesting. He had 25 questions in hand to pick out the finalists.

Sample these: Which is the second oldest toy in the world? Yoyo. It is 2,500 years old, and originated in Greece. And, made of terracotta those days! Which game resulted in the sale of pencils increasing seven-fold? Sudoku, what else! Which bird is the logo of Swarovski? Swan. Which is the longest running hoarding campaign in the world? Amul.

The final six

So, now it’s down to six teams: two from Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan (BVB) MHSS; and one each from SBOA MHSS; Satchidananda Jyoti Nikethan MHSS; Vidya Vikasini MHSS; and Bharathi MHSS.

The winner was to emerge after seven rounds of questions. Question one: What is the significance of Meow FM? India’s first talk-based radio station only for women. This was followed by a picture of a very young and lean Bill Gates, and the voice of Indra Nooyi.

The second round was fun. Anagrams! Here are a few. O! I’m unwanted – Mountain Dew; Trader scam – Master Card; Mad workers – Dream Works.

Round three had straight questions. The sale of which product goes up by 50 per cent in Meerut during the month of Ramzan? Carrom Board! Apparently, it is sent to places such as Saudi Arabia where people work at night during the month, and are prohibited from playing cards.

Rounds four and five followed, and the competition between SBOA and BVB was getting stiffer. Round six was Logos, and among others, the teams had to identify those of Mindtree Consulting and Zapak.com.

The final round was Buzz Time, fetching ten marks for the right answer and minus 10 for the wrong one. End of it, BVB and SBOA were tied for the top slot.

However, after the tie breaker (What was Wilkinson manufacturing before razor blades? Swords. The clue was in their symbol!), E. Balaji and S. Mayur Venkatesh from BVB bagged the first place. Arjun Govind Mohan and Vidyuth N. Anand of SBOA were followed by N. Giridharan and K. Shyam of BVB.

In addition to plenty of goodies and gift hampers, the winners were richer by Rs. 2,000, and the runners up by Rs. 1,500 and Rs. 1,000 respectively.

G. Balasubramaniam, treasurer of ICSI, wielded the mike for audience questions. Every right answer fetched a packet of biscuits, for the event was sponsored by ITC. Yours truly answered two (Expand MTR – Mavalli Tiffin Room; What is the mascot of Asian Paints called? – Gattu), and earned biscuits.

Rangarajan wrapped up the event with a piece of advice to the students: “Preparation for a quiz is a continuous process. Keep reading.”
