Memory lane Veteran footballer V. Varadaraj was honoured for his achievements

It was all style at the Karnataka Olympic Association’s (KOA) annual awards function. The 2007 awards were presented on November 14 at Yavanika and it was a glittering affair with the who’s who from the State sports fraternity turning up in large numbers.

The 20 awardees included athletes, swimmers, veteran footballers, sports administrators and two sports journalists. V. Varadaraj, the veteran Olympic footballer, in his early 80s was the oldest of the recipients. He was presented with a memento, a cheque, a fruit bowl and honoured with the traditional Mysore Peta by Justice Santosh Hegde, Lokayukta.

A visibly moved Varadaraj called the event as one of the most memorable in his career. “They still remembered me after all these years,” he said.

The loudest cheer was reserved for S. Pradeep Kumar, the national swimming coach, who groomed several national champions at his BAC pool. His wards turned up in large numbers. Basketballer L. Kruthika, rising shuttle player Ashwini Ponnappa and athlete Kavya Muthanna looked their best and were thrilled to walk up the dias to receive their awards. Besides honouring sports scribes, KOA also intends to include photographers in the awards list from next year. The chief guests Hegde and the Commissioner of Youth Services and Sports, Amar Kumar Pandey, lauded the efforts of the KOA for honouring the sportspersons. K. Govindaraj, President, KOA announced sports scholarships to support ten talented sportspersons for their training at home and abroad from next year.
