Away from convention

Chat with Seeman reveals his priority for direction

Impressive Director-turned actor

The success of ‘Thambi,’ has spurred Seeman to stay away from the conventional ways of giving box-office hits. And the director reveals that in his soon to be released ‘Vazhthukal,’ he has stuck to his brand of filmmaking R 12; staying off the beaten track —while treating the all too common love subject.

Seeman also hopes that through ‘Vazhthukal,’ his winning streak with Madhavan will continue. “I am actually grateful to Madhavan, because he was the one who bailed me out by accepting the offer to act in ‘Thambi.’ Many actors were not that keen to take up the offer, since my earlier films didn’t do that well in the box-office.”

The chemistry is indeed special between Seeman and Madhavan. It was the latter, who wanted Seeman to play an important role in ‘Evano Oruvan,’ slated for December release. “I am playing a cop in the film and the role is as important as Madhavan’s character. When the director Nishikant Kamat was on a look out for an artiste to play the role, Madhavan recommended my name. Since the character was to my liking I accepted it,” he says.

Seeman believes his on screen appearance has made him more popular among the audience. “You can do wonders behind the screen, but as an actor you get instant recognition. I am saying this through my experience. Lot more people know me better because I have acted in ‘Pori’ and ‘Pallikodam’,” he says.

But Seeman is neither keen on scouting for acting chances nor taking up all offers coming his way. “It’s simple. My priority is directing films. The directors of ‘Pori’ (Subramania Siva) and ‘Pallikodam’ (Thankar Bachchan) are my good friends and I did it for them. As of now my attention is on ‘Vazhthukal’ to make it a Pongal release.”

Its two years since ‘Thambi’ released. Is it a conscious decision by Seeman not to rush with his next venture? “I believe in variety and I don’t want my films to be in the same genre. So, obviously it takes time, and I feel it is worth it. After all, your work should be rewarding – both mentally and financially.”
