Colours and patterns An untitled work of Stalin
Placed off centre on the canvases with geometric shapes are perfect circles of colour that look like rings of a tree t
runk. They aren’t, they are part of the abstracts that P.J. Stalin has created as the focal point of his richly textured and layered canvases using acrylics. A little off the circle would be an arc and from a distance the arc seems to have a shadow that perspective trickery that Stalin shows his mastery with. The shadow makes the arc appear as if it is hanging in the air.
The colours are made to appear luscious with thick layering and texturing
. Using warm colours like red, orange and yellows and almost banishing blues and greens from his canvas. At one level they are geometric shapes: rectangles, triangles, squares and other irregular forms. But Stalin uses a colour format and transforms the two-dimensional objects into three-dimensional shapes with textures and brushwork.
“I use four or five coatings to get the effect of layering. Sometimes I dump and leave the colours on the canvas for a day to let them spread and create their own forms,” says Stalin. Asked about his obsession, he says: “Initially I began with figurative works, it is only over the last four years I have moved on to doing abstracts where I am trying to create my own style,” he says. Now on display at the Shrishti Art Gallery, the paintings are on show till December 5.
