Garama Garam Hits
Shemaroo, Rs.66
Shemaroo may term this video songs collection offering as “Garma Garam Hits”, but we don’t quite agree. No doubt some obvious item numbers like “Beedi Jalaiyile” and “Namak Ishq Ka” from Omkara – in which Bollywood’s reigning bombshell Bipasha Basu’s semi-bare-torsoed boogie and rustic razzmatazz bewitched both critics and the drool school – some poor selections have put a dampener on things. If the frigid doll Diya Mirza fails to up the temperature in “Mujhe Tumse Mohabbat” in Tumsa Nahin Dekha, the domesticated dullness of “We Are Hot Very Hot” from No Entry is neither hot nor yet a hit. As for some of the other songs, who has even heard of “Mashuqa Rubi Mehbooba” from Asambhav and “Ya Habibi Finak” from Awara Paagal Deewana, which seem to be little more than pointless bellydancing numbers? Some others like “Mujhme Bhi Hai Nasha” from Naksha, is steeped in obscenity, rather it borders on sleaze. Yet another Bipasha Basu number from No Entry, “Ishq Di Gali Vich”, and “Deewanee Deewanee” from Chori Chori Chupke Chupke, are the more bearable of the lot. But then one Bipasha doesn’t make an album a “hot” stuff. One wouldn’t or shouldn’t think twice before giving the cold shoulder to this alleged “hot” compilation. At Rs.66, the price seems to be quite tempting; if only the stuff were so!
Zindagi
Universal Music, Rs. 125
His voice has that enigma, which was clear in his “Ya Ali” from Gangster. This album is singer Zubeen first pop album, along with his friend Alaap who has given the music. The music director has done a very good job by
bringing in a lot of variety with this 10 song album.
The album kicks off with a very catchy yet melodious “Zindagi Kahin Gum Hai”. The second track is even energetic than the first. “Jia Re Jia Re” has a very soulful aura to it and the pace is bound to catch with you. There’s a strong rock inspiration in both these songs, which can be clearly felt in the way the guitar is being strummed. Pakistani classical vocalist Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan has lent his voice to “Tu Hi Tu Hai”. It’s only the voice that makes the difference; otherwise the music gives you a dejavu feeling. “Pal Pal Bekal” and “Shaam Dhal Jaye” are two songs rendered by the popular singer from south, Chitra. Her voice clearly rules. Both songs are highly melodious and soothing to your ears. “Nazaren Karam Ko” and “Jia Lage Na” is just the usual songs you will find in any album. The latter has the feel of the 70s. “Udte Parindo Ke” has a lot of tribal music element to it.
A good buy, as it does have some zindagi!
Aaja Nachle
YRF Music
Aaja Nachle marks Madhuri Dixit’s return to the stage, complete with her ghungroos. So one does expect music directors Salim-Sulaiman to create nothing short of a complete dance-track, not even a soundtrack!
In that sense only three of the numbers in the album live up to that mark. “Aaja nachle”, the catchy opening number and the title track, is a pure invitation to dance. Sunidhi Chauhan does a good job of providing a rousing invitation. The high point is the earthiness of its music – the shehnai and the percussion work magic for the song. “Show me your jalwa” is a knockout number with Richa Sharma, Kailash Kher and Salim Merchant bringing their individual talents to the table. A celebration of youth, its moods, and its colours manifests itself in “Soniye mil ja meley mein”. It has Madhuri Dixit doing a surprisingly good job of pitching in with the singing.
One number in the track that isn’t peppy, but is the best of the album is “O re piya”. Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s soulful rendition transports you to a rhythmic world of Sufiana and qawwali genres of music, but obviously with a more modern weave. “Ishq hua” is a slow, romantic number; quite average. In the same league and by the same artists Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghosal is “Is pal” – melodious and sweet (a Yash-Raj staple), but slows down the otherw
