blooming business The counter selling artificial flowers is a hit
Sun-kissed terracotta artefacts in various shapes and sizes greet visitors at the entrance to the North East Crafts Fair at Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium. However many seemed to head straight to a counter selling artificial flowers.
Chrysanthemums, tulips, roses… they all seemed life-like. At Rs. 5 for each stem, customers were seen buying bouquets of these.
“It is made of natural material. We were here the last time the exhibition was in town, so everyone knows us,” is all one could muster out of an extremely flustered sales girl.
A counter selling bags made of bamboo seemed to be a hit. Fancy hand bags studded with mirrors and sequins from Gujarat caught attention too.
Cane baskets
The fair also hosts an array of crafts made of bamboo – pitchers to multi-purpose cane baskets.
“You can store anything from news papers to clothes in the baskets. The bigger ones can hold flower pots,” says the vendor.
Hand-woven shawls and bed sheets from the North East catch the eye with its traditional weaves and colours. Rajasthani bed sheets with its vibrant colours and prints saw many takers.
The counters dealing with saris offered tie and dye textiles in various hues, cotton saris from Orissa and raw silk. Ready-made kurtis with mirror work and embroidery are also available.
For those who love dressing up there are earrings, bracelets and bangles galore.
Hand painted lanterns and wall hangings with carvings of fruits and leaves will definitely highlight your room.
Statues made from German silver and bronze need a second look. Those looking out for new furniture should check out the cane furniture on display.
The fair also includes stone carvings, lacquer ware, traditional paintings, carpets and grinding stones.
