Car and bike questions? We have the answers

I am planning to buy my first car and my budget is Rs. 4-4.5 lakh. I want a car that delivers 14-15kpl in the city and is low on maintenance costs.

Raghavendra

For fuel efficiency like that, you should buy one of the following - the Zen Estilo, Alto, Wagon R. These fare very well on fuel efficiency stake. They are reliable as well, so no hassles on maintenance and since you are a first time buyer, this is very important.

I own a Maruti 800 used car model that was purchased on 2001. I am the third owner. I now plan to buy a new small car and usually drive around 50-100km per month within the city. Every two or three months, I might go on a trip of 300kms. I want a car that is fuel efficient, low on maintenance, is comfortable and safe. I will use the car for the next five years. We are a family of four. My budget is Rs. 4 lakh.

We would suggest the i10, its reasonably peppy and fuel efficient. It’s everything the Santro was, and better. Alternatively, you could also look at the Swift. It’s from the segment above, so you will get more space and features.

I want to buy a small car and I travel 6 km a day. My budget is Rs. 3-4.5 lakh. I want a petrol car that is good to drive in the city, has high mileage and is low maintenance. I also want a car with good leg and boot space and an AC that works well. I have short-listed the Swift, Estilo, Spark, Santro and Xeta. Kindly advise.

Satyendra Jain

The competition is between the Swift and the Xeta and the Spark and the Santro. Out of which the Swift and Santro are the respective winners. But do take a look at the new i10. It’s a better bet than the Santro.

I have a budget of around 4-5.5 lakh. I will travel 300-400km per month and every two or three months for about 1200km on the highway. I want a petrol car that can seat five people, and is fuel efficient and low on maintenance costs. I have short-listed the U-VA and Logan. Please suggest which I should choose or give me more options.

K. Rameshkumar

Out of the short-listed cars, the Logan is a very capable car if you can overlook the boxy styling and some awkward position of switches. It can easily seat five and will be comfortable on the highway. But the U-VA looks better and is also a decent bet. But if we had to choose, it would be the Logan.

Of the Swift, Getz and U-VA, I prefer the U-VA but can’t find anyone who owns one so I do not know how to get feedback about the car. I want to know about the U-VA performance and fuel efficiency.

Shyam Mohan Rao

The U-VA is a very good car, but performance and fuel efficiency is average. It doesn’t have the enthusiasm as say a Swift. The Swift scores highly on both these counts and we would recommend the Swift.
