Educative story telling session for teachers, young children as well as their parents



Learning right The audio books

Karadi Tales are a fun way to teach young children to read, recite and learn. They were written to encourage positive behavioural traits in children, especially those in the age group 0-8, through Indian folklore, rather than encouraging them to lea rn poems that speak of ‘rolling and tumbling down the hill,’ ‘or falling off walls.’

These tales have become so popular that this method of teaching young children how to read, speak and understand languages through is called the ‘Karadi Path of learning.’

Each book is accompanied by an audio CD in which well known names like Shekhar Kapur, Nandita Das, Saeed Jaffrey, Tom Alter, Girish Karnad and Usha Uthup read out the text. There are also audio books for adults by the same company, Wings of Fire, an autobiography of A.P.J Abdul Kalam and Gandhi’s The Story of My experiments with Truth.

To spread the benefits of Karadi Tales, C.P Vishwanath, the director of Karadi Tales Company conducted two workshops in the city over the weekend. The first workshop was for teachers, emphasising on the method of teaching young children. The second workshop was for parents and little children, wherein parents were shown how children can be taught using Karadi tales. The text was displayed on a screen and the audio CD played along. The songs have fun lyrics and are accompanied by background sounds that help the children remember and repeat.

Language learning was encouraged by using Hindi words like ‘kavva,’ and ‘loombdi,’ in the tales. The young children were taught the basics of geography as well, through songs that had names of places in India.

The outdoor venue of the Saptaparini amphitheatre provided ample space for the young ones to run and screech around the place, hopping back to where their parents were seated when it was time to enact the songs from the tales.
