Swiss adventurer Louis Palmer is going around the world in a solar taxi
|
Swiss adventurer and environmentalist Louis Palmer is on a mission around the world in a solar-powered vehicle, which has been designed and built by four Swiss engineering institutes.
Dubbed the Solar Taxi, Palmer wants to demonstrate the feasibility of renewable energy for daily transportation, giving free rides to passengers along the way. He has already travelled through Europe and is now on his way across the sunny subcontinent.
The Solar Taxi can travel at speeds up to 90kph, and tows its own trailer bank of solar cells. These cells produce 50 per cent of the energy required, with the rest being produced, certified and fed into the power grid from the roof of the Swisscom building in Berne, Switzerland, for a 100 per cent emission-free vehicle. Palmer plans to visit 50 countries across five continents. Of course, he is accompanied by an engineer in a conventional vehicle with everything needed for a trip round the world.
