Bring out those woollies

Get funky, get innovative, but stay warm fashionably this winter. Renuka Vijay Kumarfinds out

Warm and trendy Stay warm, look trendy and experiment with a new look this winter

With temperatures dipping it’s time to bring out the woollies. Warm clothing doesn’t mean looking like an Eskimo or appearing fat and bundled up, it can be done stylishly as well. Whether it’s a day look or an evening out or even a traditional function, it’s easy to look smart without chattering away in the cold.

The day look

Daytime in Hyderabad winter tend to be warm and comfortable. So if you do feel the chill, a light sweater or a jacket will do. Most offices have a formal dress code, so the key is to use warmer fabrics. Pants, for men and women in a lightweight flannel or even corduroy can be worn with shirts and tops. For men who wear suits, opt for day colours suits like light grey, beige and charcoal.

The evening look

Winter evenings are nippy and get colder by the minute. Designer wear clothes merchandiser Pooja Goenka says, “Dress in a way where you can add layers like a vest or a tee-shirt, if you’re outdoors or even take them off if you’re indoors.” Women can try pant suits or skirts (mini or knee length) worn with stockings. V- neck or polo neck sweaters with jeans or ankle length skirts, worn with boots will keep you warm from head to toe. Argyle knit sweaters is a classic favourite for men. For a formal function, suits are the best bet, while casual evenings simply call for a comfortable jacket over jeans or chinos.

The Indian look

Luckily for us, saris and salwar kameez sets are warm and easily fit into a winter wardrobe. A matching sweater thrown over a salwar kameez or long sleeved sari blouses calls for only minor changes in your existing wardrobe. Salwar kameez sets in jute or thicker fabrics will also keep you warm and if someone from the northern part of the country is visiting, call for a salwar kameez set that comes with a matching shawl instead of dupatta. This is the time to bring out those heavy (and warm) Kancheevarams, Banarsi and brocade saris as well. For men, bandgala type jackets and kurtas or sherwanis will make you dapper.

Accessorise

Nothing makes or mars the look better than wrong accessories. Mufflers, gloves and even the right footwear can complete the look. If you’re wearing a mono-colour outfit, accessorise with a brightly coloured muffler. A pair of ankle-high boots will go well with cigarette pants and jeans while ankle high boots can be worn with jodhpuris and skirts. If you must wear your open-toed sandals, invest in a pair of seamless toed stockings or sheer socks.
