I have never used shampoo. I wash my hair only with shikakai. Can I use conditioner and how do I use it? Nithya

If your hair is dry, use a conditioner. After shampooing it, apply a creamy conditioner, using less quantity and massaging it lightly into the hair. Leave it on for two minutes and rinse it off with plain water. Alternatively, apply a “leave-on” conditioner or hair serum. Apply it the same way, but do not rinse it off.

I have normal skin. I apply nourishing cream/moisturiser everyday. I have a lot of blackheads on my nose. What can I do to get rid of them? Shailaja

Blackheads occur on oily areas of the skin. You may be having combination skin, with an oily T-zone (forehead, nose and chin). Avoid applying nourishing creams and moisturisers on the oily areas, because these can clog the pores and lead to blackheads. After washing your face, use a facial scrub on the areas with blackheads. Rice powder and rose water may be used. Rub it gently on the skin with circular movements. Wash it off with water. Twice a week, mix oatmeal with egg white and apply it on the blackhead- prone areas. Wash it off when it dries.

I sweat a lot and there is body odour. Vipin

Consult a doctor about the problem of excessive sweating. Ayurveda gives dietary suggestions which may help. Sip “nimbu paani”. Sip ginger tea before and after your meals. Chop fresh ginger root finely and mix it with a pinch of salt. Chew a little of this before your meal. Sipping warm water with your meal may also help. A light diet and less spices are advised. Eat smaller meals.

My jaw line is heavy and so is the skin between my chin and my neck. I am not fat but look fat because of it. — Spinz

You can do the following exercises. Open your mouth as wide as you possibly can. Now hold that position for about 10 seconds, then relax your mouth, and repeat this exercise a few more times. For faster results, add resistance by placing a tennis ball underneath your chin while testing your jaw-span. Sleeping without a pillow is said to help. You can also massage the area daily using a nourishing cream. Starting from the chin, go downwards, using both the hands, one hand following the other. The pressure should be applied downwards and not while bring the hands back to the chin. Massage for 2 to 3 minutes. Wipe off the cream with moist cotton wool.

I have red patches on some areas of my face which remain even after acne has subsided. Are these acne scars or rosacea? Malathi

In rosacea, there is redness and a flushed appearance. There may even be pimples. But rosacea and acne are different, because rosacea usually occurs at a later age. Rosacea also gets aggravated by sun-exposure, as well as extreme heat and cold. In acne, there may be pimples, blackheads and pustules. Consult a dermatologist to find out exactly what your condition is.
