The Lunch Deal buffet at Wang’s Express is worth every bit the price

Pan Asian Savour both Chinese and Indian delicacies

Cool ambience with piping hot lunch. That’s the deal, called Lunch Deal, the buffet, just opened at Wang’s Express’ Kebab House, the building that housed Kanaka Damodar Hall in the old days. Now, Spencer’s functions downstairs.

The cuisine is a delicious mix of Chinese and Indian, in fact more Chinese than Indian on some days, because the menu keeps changing, all the days, Monday to Friday, when the buffet is on, says M.S. Sridharan, Manager, Operations. Not on weekends, when it is a la carte.

As soon as you are seated in the quiet room which has soothing paintings as part of the décor, you are served soup at your table. The soup also is different every day, Sridharan says. We had clear chicken soup with spinach and celery, and lots of chicken pieces floating in it. Starters also change. Kimchi salad made for a good beginning. The crisp cabbage, a few pieces of carrot, celery and the sauce keep you busy till the hot soup comes. Vegetable and chicken momos take you back to traditional Chinese cuisine. Choose your pick from noodles, white rice, Szechuan vegetable, soft butter chicken, paneer-mattar combo, szechuan fish, dal. Roti is also served at your table. If it’s Indian first, have the roti with butter chicken or paneer-matter, then go for the noodles or rice. In a ladle of Szechuan vegetables, enjoy baby corn, cabbage and other vegetables.

The pickle is very South Indian and the chutneys have that pan Indian flavour, you cannot place all of the ingredients. The momos are stylish and the thin covering will have you wonder about the technique that the chef employed to make it so. Our kozhukkattas have thicker coverings.

“If we have chicken Szechuan today, tomorrow it will be fish. The Indian and Chinese dishes keep changing. We are going to introduce more Indian dishes too,” says Sridharan. Mixed vegetables in cashewnuts, kadai vegetables, paneer tikkas, fruit salad and sometimes red meat form the menu.

The dessert we had was two generous scoops of plain ice cream with honey crispy noodles. Dessert is also served on the table.

The buffet is well worth the Rs. 123, for the food and ambience, with good service. It’s on from 12.30 to 3.30, Monday-Friday.
