RASHMI UDAY SINGH

Vegetarians your attention please! Please read what follows and should you need any information and details do let me know and I will be happy to email them to you. For starters, here’s my confession! Even though as a food critic I have had to circle the globe and taste everything from crocodile to kangaroo, I am inclined to be a vegetarian. Wherever I roam I try and track vegetarian restaurants. In the heart of Zurich I discover the 110 year old pure veggie “Hiltl” and marvel at its ingenious menu. I study vegetarian eateries in Australia (and even discover a pure vegetarian Chinese restaurant). Believe it or not, the best vegetarian meal that I have had till date is in Paris and that too in a Michelin-starred restaurant. I have actually contributed a chapter on “Eating veggie in Italy” to “The little book of Italy” and am on a constant mission to track down vegetarian havens. And of course was on a perpetual high while working on my vegetarian cookbook.

However, more stringent than vegetarians are the vegans, they not only avoid meat and fish but also dairy and dairy products. Should you happen to be a vegan, I have good news for you... Marieen, one of the founders of People for Animals, Chennai, creates vegan and vegetarian dishes.

Onion pastry, soft, fluffy and tasty pinwheel sandwiches with celery are all made by this 34-year-old talented woman. Though born a Syrian Christian and a non-vegetarian, Marieen became a vegetarian and then a vegan and happily cooks both kinds of food.

Marieen’s specialties are vegan and flavoured mayonnaise, brownies, sandwich spreads and decorative cakes. Her minimum order for cakes is half kilo. She will also take corporate orders. Another interesting offering from Marieen are ready-to-bake cookie and brownie mixes. Just pick up the mix and bake at leisure. Remember that Marieen needs advance notice and she does not home deliver.
