My face is tanned due to sun exposure. It is also oily. Is there a home remedy? — Preethika

For oily skin, after cleansing, mix rose water or cucumber juice with lemon juice in equal quantities and apply it daily on the face, washing it off after15 minutes. Mix multani mitti with rose water and lemon juice and apply it thrice a week, washing it off when it dries. Use a facial scrub twice or thrice times a week, but do not apply it on pimples. Mix one teaspoon each of honey, curd and lemon juice and apply it daily on the face, at any time. Wash it off after20 minutes. It helps remove tan.

Suggest a method that can be tried at home to determine the type of my skin? Will it vary with the weather? — Sukanya

Normal to oily skin is usually prone to blackheads, open pores, pimples and acne. Dry skin has a fine texture and feels taut after it is washed with soap. On waking up in the morning, wipe your face with a tissue, without washing it. If it is clean, the skin is normal to dry. If there is an oily stain on it, the skin is normal to oily. You can wipe the T-zone with a different tissue to see if you have combination skin. Yes, there can be seasonal changes. Dry skin may be come drier, while oily skin may feel better or experience superficial dryness.

Your brother should wash his hair at least four times a week, using very little shampoo and rinsing well with water. Half an hour before shampooing the hair, apply two tablespoons of vinegar and massage it lightly into the scalp. The hair that is already grey will not become dark, except by colouring/dyeing it. Amla is said to check greying. Ask him to drink the juice of one raw amla daily, after adding it to a glass of water. Dried and ground amla can also be added to henna paste and applied on the hair. But, henna turns grey hair reddish brown.

What can I do for a double chin? — Maryam

Do these daily exercises. First, open your mouth as wide as you can. Hold this position for about 10 seconds, then relax your mouth, and repeat the exercise a few more times. For faster results, add resistance by placing a tennis ball underneath your chin while testing your jaw-span. Sleeping without a pillow is said to reduce a double chin. You can also massage the area daily using a nourishing cream. Starting from the chin, go downwards, using both the hands, one hand following the other. The pressure should be applied downwards and not while bringing the hands back to the chin. Massage for 2 to 3 minutes. Wipe off the cream with moist cotton wool.

I have light eyebrows. How can I make them thicker? Rajani

You can make your eyebrows appear thicker with make-up. You will need an eyebrow pencil and an eyebrow brush. Use light feathery strokes. Try using a brown pencil instead of black. This helps to achieve a more natural look. Castor oil is said to encourage the growth of eyebrows. You can apply it daily.

What is til oil? Where can I buy it? Can I use it on my hair and body? — Ashu

Til oil is sesame seed oil. It is also called gingelly oil and is readily available in the market. Til oil can be used on the body and hair. According to Ayurveda, til oil can be used in all seasons.
