Director Sooraj Barjatya says he tries to depict time-tested values on the big or small screen

CELEBRATING VALUES Director Sooraj Barjatya
Just when we thought small towns were out of the picture in Bollywood, Sooraj Barjatya gave us Vivah. Panned by most critics as being out of sync with today’s sensibilities, the film went on to do good business in most centres. Recently premiered on Zee Cinema, the film raked in decent TRPs. Now Sooraj is bringing the same sensibilities to the small screen with Main Teri Parchhain Hoon on NDTV.
“The multiplex boom has made many of us believe that India resides only in the metros. It is a myth. Critics even felt the language in Vivah was out of sync with the times. But they forgot that the film was set in Mathura where such language is still in use, and not the Hinglish of the metros. And even if purity of language is on the decline, as creative people, it is our responsibility to try and bring the glorious days back. The film has broken many a myth and now we want to depict the same values on television.”
Sooraj says Main Teri… is an emotional story of a young girl who follows her conscience and tries to right the wrong she has unknowingly and unintentionally done to a family.
It is often said that like Karan Johar, Sooraj has not seen the harsher side of life. And that’s why all his films have a happy feel. “It is true to an extent. I have not seen gharibi. But I have grown up in a value system that is fast becoming a thing of the past in different media.
So I want to celebrate those values through my film stories. In our films, nobody is a villain. It is only the circumstances that are villainous. Be it the fire in Vivah or the death of sister in Hum Apke Hain Koun, it has always been the circumstances.”
He tried to bridge the gap between small town values and big city lifestyle with Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon, but the film bombed. “It was a mistake. Maybe the characters were out of sync with the values they subscribed to. That’s why we went back to our strengths, both in terms of script and music.”
He is himself taking a break from direction, but Sooraj says Rajshri Films is soon coming up with Ek Aur Vivah. “It will present another side of marriage.”
