Tanjore paintings of the century
|
An exhibition of Tanjore paintings that covers a range of themes
|
A Tanjore painting is a piece of work most traditionalists or art lovers wants to possess, not just for its gold relief work and semi precious stones, but also for its beauty that makes each piece unique. Tanjore paintings have their origins in Tamil
Nadu, but it is said they were promoted by artists from Andhra Pradesh. As is the case with all Tanjore paintings, the paintings at their exhibition are pictures of Indians deities.
The 30–odd pieces on display are the collection of Kishan Chander Agarwal, who has been collecting Tanjore paintings since he was a teenager. Some paintings have an antique look about them, while the others have been handed down by his father, an avid collector of Tanjore paintings himself. The paintings have been sourced from all over the country.
Initially Kishan only wanted to display his large collection at the gallery, but decided that he would sell a few from his collection. Some of the gods and goddesses have been created in designs that depict the outdoors. Sizes range from the traditional miniature size Tanjore to some that will take up a good chunk of your wall space and perhaps deserve it as well.
The two most famous Tanjore deities, Krishna and Ganesha are in most paintings, while the less common ones like goddess Lakshmi, Vishnu and a standing Ganesha are also here.
