Indian cities soon to get Gloria Jean’s Coffees

We don’t seem to be able to get enough of coffee. With brands and chains proliferating, a new one has now joined the tray. Citymax India now brings Australian coffee house Gloria Jean’s Coffees to India.

Present already in over 30 countries, the launch was announced at New Delhi’s Le Meridian hotel this week. John McCarthy, Australian High Commissioner to India, is optimistic about this venture. He believes that since Australia is known in India for iron ore and gold, here is an opportunity to alter that image. While the brand was originally started in America, it is now completely Australian, as the parent company was bought out.

Providing a lengthy history of coffee, Ravi Saxena, Managing Director, Citymax India, said now is the time to tap into the expanding Indian market. Saxena asserted, “India was considered a tea drinking country. But that is no longer the case.” Saying the target is to open 500 outlets in the next 10 years, he promised that the atmosphere at the coffee houses will be distinctly homely, appealing to both the young and the old.

Delhi, though, will be six months older before it gets its own outlet, in June 2008, followed by Bangalore. The ribbon for the first outlet will be cut in Mumbai in February 2008.

While the exact prices of the beverages have yet to be decided, Saxena affirmed, “These will be value-for-money and not premium products.”
