Winter care for your tresses

Your hair needs special care this cold and dry season

Cold comfort Don’t streak your hair in winter

Here are some tips you can follow to keep your hair lovely and lustrous throughout winter.

“It is this season that possesses the potential to damage one’s hair,” says Neha Sagar, a make-up artist. “The main reason for hair damage is the stereotypical notion that one needs to wash one’s hair under boiling hot water!” Extreme heat can spoil your hair. Use only warm water.

Using a good conditioner is essential. However, avoid washing your hair too often. Maya warns, “Do not step outdoors with dripping wet hair. You would be risking breakage if you did.” Note: Avoid using blow dryers, natural drying is more suitable.

As tempted as you may be to streak your pretty locks or iron out those curls, experts suggest that this isn’t the best season to attempt such treatment as these can rob your hair of its moisture. The dry and cold winter poses a threat to your scalp.

Dandruff is the most irritable and common problem faced. Says beautician Rekha Jacob: “Dandruff can be gotten rid of by massaging one’s scalp with aloe vera juice or by applying olive oil to one’s hair. ”

A paste of fresh methi leaves applied over the scalp helps rid your hair of those tiring flakes of dandruff as well as gives your hair a glossy finish.

“Always cover your hair with a silk scarf to guard it from the chill winds but make sure that it isn’t tied too tight,” suggests Rekha. Also use this scarf before you don your stylish winter hat; else, be prepared to have one of your worst hair days. Finally, “Drink volumes of water,” Nair adds. This is one of the most important means to achieve the end you are committed to.
