Fat-free indulgence

Gelatissimo, the latest gelato outlet in the city, has close to a 100 flavours of sorbets, gelatos and sundaes on offer

YUMMY TREATS Made with milk instead of cream, with far less butterfat than regular ice cream, gelato cakes also manage to pack in more flavour

It’s common sense that anything that tastes really good must be bad for you. Or, is it? For anyone who’s indulged in that extra bit of ice cream and worried about it going straight to their thighs, here is gelato.

Made with milk instead of cream, with far less butterfat than regular ice cream, gelato also manages to pack in more flavour because it is denser than regular ice cream and is less frozen too. If you think that sounds too good to be true, just step into Gelatissimo, the latest gelato outlet in the city and try it out for yourself.

The gelato parlour was recently started by Suprateek Dasgupta, who had previously brought the Mamma Mia gelato franchise to the city. Having since broken off to start his own brand of gelato, Suprateek has set up a rather grand 2,000 square foot outlet, complete with a children’s play area. While the space is a definite incentive as far as ice cream parlours in the city go, what makes Gelatissimo worth it is the superb range of flavours to match.

Between the sorbets and the 96 per cent fat-free and the 99 per cent fat-free gelatos, Gelatissimo has close to a 100 flavours on offer. If you’re a chocolate fan or like you ice cream thick, brown and gooey, you could try the death by chocolate with Oreo cookies and Belgian chocolate chips, the Irish coffee with the flavour of caramel almonds and whisky, the fudge brownie or the nutty muddy. Or you could try the cheesecake or yoghurt gelatos, which come in orange, strawberry, forest berry and cherry flavours.

And if like Julia Roberts in “Steel Magnolias”, pink is your signature colour, you have to try the bubblegum flavour. Packed with all the joy of childhood, this flavour is easily the most fun one can have with ice cream. But if signature flavours are what you want, Gelatissimo has a range of ice creams that imitate your favourite guilty pleasures. Take the roche, for instance. Pop a spoon of this offering in your mouth and you can almost imagine taking a bite out of a Ferrero Roche. Then there’s the kit kat flavour. Or try the Bailey’s gelato, which wonderfully mimics all of the creamy goodness of the original. Then there’s the lighter side of gelato, the fruit sorbets. Made only with pulp and water, these ice creams are free of dairy and hence fat-free. These sorbets include almost every exotic fruit one can imagine, from ruby orange to blueberry to honeydew melon to wine grape. I try the Sicily lemon and am immediately astounded by the richness of flavour. Every spoon of this gelato is like a little concentrated bubble of lime bursting on your tongue. Wonderfully invigorating, the sorbets are easily one of the freshest ways to get your sugar fix. If just scoops of ice cream doesn’t sound appealing enough, Gelatissimo also offers a range of sundaes, frappes and gelato cakes.

The Ferrero Roche sundae, for instance, offers roche and dark fudge gelato topped with hot fudge, hazelnut sauce, whipped cream and Ferrero Roche chocolates. Then there’s the dark twilight sundae, which combines peppermint gelato, hot fudge and Belgian chocolate chips. The cakes feature slices of cake sponge alternated with various gelatos. Although the sponge tends to get a little harder than ideal, it provides a nice texture contrast to the ice cream. And Gelatissimo has a special section for diabetics and weight watchers too, with a variety of sugar-free ice creams. All in all, a wide enough range that the idea of gelato couldn’t sound boring for a long time to come. Gelatissimo is at 503, CMH Road (next to Fab India), Indiranagar and can be contacted on 65365757.
