Oh Christmas tree For many families putting up a Christmas tree signals the official start for the holiday season

Oh Christmas tree, oh Christmas tree, of all the trees so lovely … goes a popular Christmas carol. For many families putting up Christmas trees signals the official start for the holiday season. Coming in various sizes and varieties, retailers in the city are busy stocking up with the latest.

According to DeCruz, manager, Style Plus, there are three kinds of Christmas trees: pine trees, deluxe trees (for those who want a bushy tree) and ordinary Christmas trees (not so bushy and the leaves are a pale shade of green).

White Christmas

Those who want a white Christmas should drop by Dreamz for a tree. The prices start from Rs.500.

The Christmas trees come in various sizes. Says Sajith Kumar, manager, De Options, “There are trees ranging from four and eight feet tall. Families however, prefer trees ranging between four to six feet.”

However if it’s spreading some Christmas cheer to your office that you want to do, tiny Christmas trees are available at reasonable prices.

If you have a big pocket, Style Plus has a section for branded trees, Aouncer, priced at Rs.22,000. “These trees are tall, have thick foliage and looks real,” says DeCruz.

Optical fibre trees have takers too. With leaves which light up, it saves buying Christmas lights.

Christmas trinkets

But a Christmas tree seems bare sans the Christmas trinkets that adorn them. Shops such as Style Plus, De Options, Dreamz, Garden City and Archies have a host of ornaments for the tree with prices starting from Rs. 10.

Says Kavitha, manager, Archies, “The accent is on small hangings. This year it’s mostly decorations such as balls, bells, stars, bow ribbons and Santa Claus figurines that are popular. These come mostly in sets of six.”

And they come in various hues and colours-all bright. They also vary in embellishments. If some have bright ribbons around them, others have a glittery finish. Glass balls available at some stores make elegant hangings but are not for those with kids and dogs in the house. Stars to top the tree come in gold and silver.

To light up the tree come Christmas lights in various shapes, sizes and features. If some lights dance according to the beat of Christmas carols, others change from one rainbow colour to another.

Nativity scenes engraved in wood seem to be a hit amongst customers. For those making a nativity scene, figurines of baby Jesus, Mary and the shepherds are available.

Figurines of Santa Clauses which sing and dance are doing the rounds too.

For those who want to create an air of festivity to the home, wreaths of holly and poinsettias are available, as are streamers saying ‘Merry Christmas.’ Colourful candles in a variety of shapes lend colour to a room. Some candles come with an appetising smell of cinnamon.

So for those of you hunting for a Christmas tree, happy hunting, and have fun decking it and doing your house up for the season.
