A treat in Gurgaon

A new commercial complex gets a film-style launch

Gurgaon celebrated the opening of yet another commercial complex, Universal Trade Tower, this past week. A stage, reminiscent of a film award function set, was put up on the occasion to host a dance and music show at the HUDA Gymkhana Club premises. Mini Mathur, the TV anchor, was the Emcee for the event, which began with the bursting of firecrackers.

The highlight of the evening was ‘Bollywood Dreams’, a perspective of the Bombay film industry over the years, through a dance performance by Shiamak Dawar’s troupe. There was a special tribute to the big fat Indian wedding, as seen through Bollywood movies, from Sridevi’s “Mere Hathon Mein …” from Chandini to Madhuri’s tribute to Hindustani traditions and sanskar in Hum Aapke Hain Koun.

True to its trademark style, the Shiamak troupe performed in different genres — from traditional, classical steps to hip-hop to twist into a fusion of genres. But while the young dancers were comfortable in the latest numbers, they were not able to generate the underlying passion and grace required to do justice to old hits. Surely, Madhubala and Rekha are a tough act to follow.

Fashion show

The evening also saw a Vikram Phadnis fashion show, where svelte models walked the ramp. However, it was the solo performance by Sonu Nigam, which had the audience in a frenzy, asking for more. Sonu sure has developed a good technique for showmanship and strikes an instant rapport with the audience.
