Awareness of olive oil is on the rise
|
It’s raining olive oil. At a recent International Conference on Mediterranean Diet and Health at Shangri La, all topics pertaining to olive oil were discussed. With eminent speakers like Mohammed Sbitri, Executive Director, International Olive
Oil Council, Professor Antonia Trichopoulou, Director of WHO and Master Chef Sanjeev Kapoor, the two-day event was an exhaustive overview on health and diet.
Citing various convincing statistics, Trichopoulou said, “The Mediterranean diet is a gift of god.” Life expectancy increases and disease rates are seen to fall for people who follow a Mediterranean diet, which usually contains plenty of olive oil, olives, legumes, fruits and vegetables.
It is the combination of foods, rather than single foods, which are seen to be the most effective. With over 200 micro components, olive oil is seen as something more than just saturated fats.
Chef Sanjeev Kapoor, whose book, “Best of India, Cooking with Olive Oil” was released at the event, said that incorporating olive oil into Indian cooking is not a difficult task. To familiarise children with olive oil, the IOC held contests for students. Students across six cities had to make up a 100-word slogan on health and olive oil.
