Cup that doesn’t cheer
|
VIEW R. Sujatha, a student of SSKV School, Kanchipuram on schools gifting books instead of cups or medals
|
I have seen cups/medals being given as tokens of appreciation to students at school and college functions by eminent personalities who come as chief guests. The cups or medals inspire students to reach new glories. But I suggest that instead of medal
s/cups/plaques, the school authorities should gift books or scholarship which are of real utility. Most of these cups and medals are made of cheap metal or simply gold coated and in the course of time, they lose glitter and charm. These cups and medals could also be damaged during transportation. Selling them may not be in good taste (anyway, no takers for pieces of metals)!
In fact, I have won many such cups and medals for my talent in public speaking/essay writing. I once suggested to my school correspondent to present me study material. What a surprise! He instantly took to the suggestion and I was complimented by fellow students. And you know what? I won one more medal, sorry, a book for making this “bright” suggestion. My maid’s son is intelligent, and has won several cups and medals. They now occupy precious space and are gathering dust. Books, notebooks or pens could actually help him pursue his studies.
