Getting eggy Sharad Babu with his egg collection

A professional trip to South Africa helped Sharad Babu take up an unusual hobby- that of carving egg shells into pretty things that are good enough to be used as decorative pieces.

Egg craft is the art of decorating the inside and outsides of an empty egg shell with sometimes each egg created around a theme. Sharad learnt the art of egg craft almost 5 years ago, but he learnt the craft on Ostrich eggs. Once he realised how difficult it was to source Ostrich eggs here, he decided to challenge himself and replicated what he learnt on duck eggs.

For example, there the cradle scene, complete with a satin lined bed recreated inside the egg shell or the play pen, colourfully done up on the inside and the outside, or the series of three eggs, all placed in a row and craved in way that looks like a series of hoops to jump through. Keeping in mind the season, many of his creations on display revolve around the Christmas theme.

One of his creations

The eggs are hollowed out and rinsed. They are then cut, carved and scooped and the outsides and insides are painted and decorated with various rhinestones, pieces of satin and other fabric and other accessories needed to complete the scene. The piece is also coated with a kind of resin to give a transparent sheen and strength to the final product. Some of the piece have an intricate design carved on them, giving the illusion of a simplified Faberge Egg!

These unique art pieces are priced at Rs. 999 each.
