Shubhradeep Chakravorty wraps up a film on the Gujarat encounters

Non-judgemental Filmmaker Shubhradeep Chakravorty
As the political climate gains momentum courtesy the Gujarat elections, creative people are busy giving their inputs to heat up the climate.
Documentary filmmaker Shubhradeep Chakravorty recently premiered his film Encountered on Saffron Agenda? .
An investigation
The man, who has earlier made “Godhra Tak”, says, “The film investigates the encounters of Sameer Khan Pathan, Sadik Jamal, Ishrat Jahan, Javed Sheikh and Sohrabuddin Sheikh. The film is not judgmental, but the facts of the cases indicate that these encounters could be fake.”
Shubradeep says he has shot the film in seven States and has interviewed 37 people including KTS Tulsi, former Counsel for the Gujarat government.
“The film has been shot in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Delhi, the places where the wires of the cases are attached. I have gone through FIRs, post mortem reports and other official records and have spoken to the family members of those killed in the encounters. All these people were encountered after being labelled as a threat to Narendra Singh Modi. The film looks into how they were picked up from different places and then eliminated. Like Sameer was picked up from Mumbai and Sohrabuddin from Andhra Pradesh.”
Shubhradeep says the voiceover nowhere alleges that they have been murdered in the name of encounters. “It is only the persons interviewed who have made such remarks.
Matter of opinion
At the end, it is for the viewer to make his opinion.
He says the timing of the film premiere is a matter of chance. “I believe no single piece of art, be it a book, a film or a painting, can bring about a political change.”
Shubhradeep’s earlier much feted work Godhra Tak was used during the Bihar elections to create communal tension.
“I criticised the move of the political party that did it. And if somebody uses this film like that, I would be the first person to oppose it.”
