Just six - Genelia

Bossing around…

At work Genelia in ‘Mr. Medhavi’

More than a year since Bommarillu, people fondly remember her as the lively Hasini. Since then, Genelia has been making her moves carefully. After Dhee, she’ll be seen in director Neelakanta’s Mr. Medhavi co-starring Raja. We quiz her on playing the corporate boss in this film.

I’ve grown up: Mr. Medhavi is one of those films for which I had to my best. It’s a typical Neelakanta film with a strong character for the woman. Until now, I’ve been playing cute, girl-next-door characters. Here, I’ve been given a mature look and I hope the maturity reflects on my performance.

Woman on top: Neelakanta said I will be given the role of a woman who heads a company. That got me hooked. Then, as he narrated the story, I knew it wasn’t a stereotyped film where women are underestimated and used as pushovers. Mr. Medhavi is about powerful people in the corporate sector. It is not a comment on the way the industry works; it’s a human relations story.

Juggle game: Apart from Mr. Medhavi, I also have a film directed by Seenu Vytla. I’ve been dividing my time between Telugu, Tamil and Hindi films. I am careful about my choices. After Bommarillu, I could have easily signed on a dozen films, stepped into the rat race and tried to consolidate my position. But I am aware that my career would then be short-lived.

Hasini: I’d rate my role of Hasini in Bommarillu as the best one I’ve portrayed till date. The film’s success has given me a huge responsibility. Among all the characters I’ve enacted so far, I relate best to Hasini. Sometimes I wonder if I can be like her in real life.

Too choosy? I know people have this impression about me that I’ve become too choosy for my own good. I chose Mr. Medhavi because despite being a small budget film, it promised me a substantial role.

Back to Bollywood: I debuted in Hindi films before I signed on Tamil and Telugu projects. Now, I am being given good offers in Hindi again. I’ll be working in Aamir Khan’s next production which will launch his nephew, followed by a film with Priyadarshan.
