Songs of joy

A group comprising singers rang in Christmas into the city

SINGING CAROLS Spreading Xmas cheer

Bringing in good cheer and the wonderful spirit of Xmas, a group of people called ‘Family Services’ performed at the YWCA, Fort Cochin to share what they called “the love and joy of Xmas.” With a gathering of people to take pa rt in the festivity of the season, the group based in Bangalore who travel all around the country stopped by at Cochin to fill lonely hearts with happiness.

Working mostly with children – orphans, street children, destitute and others – hope and joy are brought into their lives through dance, drama, sport and fun. And Christmas being a time to spread happiness , the troop consisting (largely of volunteers) from different parts of the globe, came down to Kochi, this time to bring blessings into the lives of those at the ‘Home of Faith’ in Kakkanad.

Performing and offering gifts through sponsorships, they began the evening with the carol ‘Felis Navida’, a duet accompanied by the key board and the guitar that was made complete with dance by a group of young girls. The evening remained abuzz with various Christmas carols, sung both by young children and adults alike, each packaged with a special Christmas message – either of love, giving or sharing.

Or the hilarious skit of two knights and the Queen of England that the queen sends with two sacks each to be brought back filled with any thing special.

While one returns with gold and treasure gathered from a nearby village, the other returns empty handed, giving the little he has to buy bread for the hungry in the same village. He wins the heart of the queen, and so also the moral of the story that a good and giving heart always succeeds. When asked Abbey, a member of the group, she explained it as the best way to spread love.

For a cause

“Through performance and music, we believe we bring life into peoples lives, especially those who have little to live for, or little to excel in life for. When they see a performance, it motivates them, more so it allows them to see the lighter, happier side of life. It gives them a reason to smile.” So much that whole families such as Tim and Elizabeth’s who have dedicated themselves for the cause. Tim and Elizabeth explain that they believe music changes people, and changes moods. So much that once the show tapered to an end, the crowd joined in the celebration: of life and of that moment.
