Crafts Utsav
Arts & Crafts Exposition (ACE) is organising an exhibition cum sale of handlooms, handicrafts and jewellery from December 19 to January 6 at Gangothri Hall, Rajaji Road. A range of silks, tussars and cottons and the famed Patachitra and Palm leaf
paintings too will be on exhibit.
Patachitra
The Patachitra originated in the Jaganath temple as an annual ritual. Three paintings on specially treated cloth or patas are prepared by the temple painter and hung in the sacred precincts. Over the years patas developed as a distinct school of painting done by artists. Blood red, ochre, lamp black, yellow and white and indigo blue offset each other in the paintings. Canopies, lamp shades, garden umbrellas, handbags, tents, bed and table covers in appliqué and patchwork too find a place in the sale. Silver filigree items, stone and wood carving and Dhokra casting will too be on display and for sale.
Dhokra casting
Dhokra casting is essentially a folk art limited to Kuliana in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal and Puri district being practised by a tribe called Sithulias. The lost wax process is followed in its making and the raw materials used are not pure brass but contain scraps of metals to give an antique look. The motifs are mainly drawn from folk culture. While among the animals the elephant is the most popular, other motifs include human heads, kings, manas or miniature replica of measures, containers with lids, with or without locking devices.
There is a 10 per cent discount of handicrafts and 20 per cent discount on handlooms.
