Assassin’s view Nathuram Godse being handcuffed before the trial
The present generation hardly knows the profile of Nathuram Godse the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi. What was the actual mystery and reason behind this man and his actions? The Sutradhar School of Acting presented Main Nathuram Godse
the Hindi translation of Dalvi’s play on Sunday under the aegis of Telugu University Auditorium, beside Public Gardens.
The play shows the other side of the history. It’s an assassin’s point of view dealing with the reasons that compelled Nathuram Godse to kill a great human being like Mahatma Gandhi, and that despite the former acknowledging the latter as Father of the Nation?
The play begins with a middle-aged man telling about himself. He introduces himself as Nathuram Vinayak Godse and reveals that if he were alive he would be 97. He announces proudly that he has gunned down Gandhiji. The assassination is the end of Gandhiji’s life, but that is where his life begins. The fictitious events that happened after the assassination and before the hanging of Nathuram are what the play deals with. He was not at all hesitant to confess to his sins.
The 105-minutes play throws light on some unknown facets of Indian history which are thought provoking.
The play consisted of various scenes showcasing different circumstances and conditions in Godse’s trial. Scenes where Devdas Gandhi son of Mahatma Gandhi meets Nathuram in the jail to influence him to sign the vakalat papers, so that he may plead his case in the court and save Godse from being hanged were also the part of the play.
Vinay Varma as Nathuram Godse shone and lived the role. He was very composed as required for the role. Arun Shendurnikar as Superintendent of Police Shiekh and Prakash Dharma as Inspector Sawant performed well as tough police officials with humanitarian values. All other characters in the play did justice to their roles.
