Bid adieu in style

The revelery has begun and it’s time to bring out your partying best. Renuka Vijay Kumarfinds out the trends for this festive season

The festivities that come with the month of December have begun. It’s not just Christmas and New Year but a host of other parties and outdoor events that are held this month, giving people ample reason to dress up and put together a festive war drobe.

The emphasis is mostly on western wear and dresses seem to rule. Designer Kedar Madulla who retails from Hyderabad and Mumbai says that people often ask for dresses saying that this is the season for them and they don’t often get a chance to wear them otherwise.

Fabrics being used are lush and rich like velvet and satin. “Bustier style dresses with velvet are very popular. Length-wise, outfits are either really short or long. For a formal event, look at maxi style dresses, while the shorter styles are more apt for casual evenings,” adds Kedar.

Ethnic Indian wear still has its feet firmly in place, but has made way for indo-western and fusion wear for people who like more movement in their clothes but don’t want to stray from what they consider safe. Kalamkari fabric with the motifs highlighted and embellished with stones and thread work are being used to make dresses or to line jackets and as borders.

Rahul Mishra and Firdos Samar of Rahul and Firdos have used traditional bandhini prints to create western outfits. Dresses, skirts, and tube tops figure in their line of reds, pinks, blues and greens, all vibrant and rich colours.

Designer Puja Sahney suggests full sleeved dresses with voluminous sleeves. “Scarves and neck ties with dresses and boots to complete the look are what I recommend.”

Thicker fabrics like tweeds and plaids are smart for skirts and dresses” For an androgynous look to a regular outfit Puja suggests a dress made out of suiting material.

It’s still not too late to get an outfit tailored to suit your style and needs. Most department stores across the city have launched a festive wear line, giving due importance to evening wear. Shoppers Stop, Hyderabad Central, Lifestyle and Globus store these lines.

Stand alone stores like Also, Elahe, Origins, Anonym and Wundershop are places where you can find exclusive designer wear.

Whatever you choose to wear this fortnight, the mantra seems to be pretty simple. Whether you’re warm and cosy or bare and freezing, everyone wants to look pretty and dolled up. As Kedar sums up the common thought: “Brave the cold to look sexy.”
