Adios!

End of the year, and the revelry has begun. Renuka Vijay Kumaron how to bid goodbye to the year, in style

Trendy and traditional A dress by Rahul and Firdos

It’s December, and the festivities have begun. There’s reason enough to dress up and redo your wardrobe.

The emphasis is mostly on western wear, and dresses rule. Designer Kedar Madulla who retails from Hyderabad and Mumbai says that people often ask for dresses saying that this is the season for them and they don’t often get a chance to wear them otherwise.

Fabrics used are lush and rich like velvet and satin. “Bustier-style dresses with velvet are popular. Length-wise, the outfits are either very short or long. For formalwear, try the maxi-style dresses, and for casual evenings, slip into the shorter ones.”adds Kedar.

Ethnic Indian wear still holds ground, but it has made way for indo-western and fusion wear for people who like more movement in their clothes but don’t want to stray from what they consider safe. Kalamkari fabric with the motifs highlighted and embellished with stones and thread work are being used to make dresses or to line jackets, or as borders.

Boutique owners and designers Rahul Mishra and Firdos Samar have used traditional bandhini prints to create western outfits. Dresses, skirt, and tube tops figure in their line of reds, pinks, blues and greens, all vibrant and rich colours.

Designer Puja Sahney suggests full-sleeved dresses with voluminous sleeves. “Scarves and neck ties with dresses and boots complete the look.”

Thicker fabrics like tweeds and plaids are smart for skirts and dresses. For an androgynous look to a regular outfit Puja suggests a dress made out of suiting material.

It’s still not too late to get an outfit made to suit your style and needs. Most department stores across the city have launched a festive wear line, giving due importance to evening wear. Shoppers Stop, Lifestyle and Globus store these lines.

Whatever you choose to wear this fortnight, the mantra seems to be pretty simple. Whether you’re warm and cosy or bare and freezing, everyone wants to look pretty and dolled up. As Kedar sums up, “ Brave the cold to look sexy.”
