Fourframs

Hollywood

Christmas-New Year is the season for racy entertainers. This week Four Frames offers a preview of X’mas releases worldwide.

It is the biggest festival season at the U.S. box-office and there will be five major releases. The biggest is “National Treasure: Book of Secrets”, an action-adventure film, starring Nicolas Cage. Besides, there are “Walk Hard”, a musical comedy, Johnny Depp’s musical crime thriller, “Sweeney Todd-The Demon Barber of Fleet Street”, Tom Hanks’ bio-pic “Charlie Wilson’s War”, and a romantic tear-jerker “P.S. I Love You”. However, none of these films will enjoy a simultaneous Indian release because of lack of theatres.

Kollywood

After the stupendous opening Ajith’s “Billa” took only a week ago, there are only three small films in Tamil for Christmas — the Prakash Raj, Seeta, Sheela, Raja and Livingston-starrer “Kanna”, which is a love story; “Puli Varudhu” starring ‘Jithan’ Ramesh, Malika Kapoor and Karunas, a thriller with some comedy in the first half; and “Palaniappa Kaloori”, another college campus caper, with newcomers in the lead.

Tollywood, Mollywood

The Andhra Pradesh box-office, like it’s counterpart in Tamil Nadu, is superstar driven. Nagarjuna’s biggie “Don” was released this week. It is the lone Telugu Christmas release and is directed by choreographer, actor-turned-director Lawrence, who last gave Nag the big hit “Mass”. For Lawrence, it is a crucial film – first, because it is first attempt at music direction and, second, he has to deliver a hit what with his last two directorial ventures “Style” and “Muni” sank without a trace. Yoga teacher-turned-starlet Anushka is the heroine in “Don”. Christmas is the second biggest festival season in Kerala after Onam, and the best time of year to watch movies. There are three big films releasing this weekend — Mohanlal’s comedy-cum- psychological thriller “Flash”, directed by Sibi Malayil, who has made some classics (“His Highness Abdullah”, “Bharatham” and “Kireedam”) with the master actor, then there is “Katha Parayumbol”, in which Mammootty plays a superstar and bonds with his childhood friend, a barber, played by Sreenivasan, and Prtiviraj’s “Kangaroo”, which is about the travails of an auto driver who has to take care of an abandoned baby!

BOLLYWOOD

There are two major Hindi releases. The first is Aamir Khan's directorial debut "Taare Zameen Par". It is said to be a brilliant film portraying a sensitive subject - the story of a dyslexic boy. Says Aamir: "It's an emotional story. It is only after going through the script, that I really considered acting in the film. Every home has a child; so let's hope the audience appreciates this effort when it hits the theatres." The other big release is writer-director Anees Bazmee's "Welcome", a comic caper about three Hong Kong-based mobsters (Nana Patekar, Anil Kapoor and Feroze Khan), who want to get their sister (Katrina Kaif) married to a man (Akshay Kumar) from a respectable family. But, the young man's uncle (Paresh Rawal) objects and then a stunning bombshell (Mallika Sherawat) claims that he (Akshay) is her husband!
