Triple treat

TV Watch three of Hitchcock’s best films this evening

PIX showcases “Frenzy” at 5 p.m. this evening, “The Birds” at 7 p.m. and “Marnie” at 10 p.m.

Alfred Hitchcock’s penultimate feature “Frenzy” was not only the master’s first British-based production in two decades, but also a return to creepy form after his rocky late Sixties period. Richard Blaney (Jon Finch) is a down-on-his-luck chap, who becomes ensnared in the London police hunt for the ‘neck tie’ murderer, when his ex-wife becomes a victim. Determined to prove his innocence, he goes on the run but additional murders make his situation worse. Blaney seeks refuge with pal Bob Rusk (Barry Foster) but finds himself thrown into jail. He soon discovers who the real serial killer is but first, must break out of jail to clear his name.

“The Birds”, Hitchcock’s most popular film, begins rather innocuously, as a beautiful, strong-willed socialite (Tippi Hedren) travels to the coastal town of Bodega Bay to hook up with a rugged fellow (Rod Taylor) whom she has just met. There, however, bizarre things start happening; the birds are behaving strangely.

In “Marnie”, Marnie Edgar (Tippi Hedren) is a troubled young woman who has an unnatural fear and mistrust of men, thunderstorms and the colour red. She is also a compulsive thief. She uses her charms on Sidney Strutt (Martin Gabel) to get a job without references. Then late one night, she steals the contents of the company safe and disappears. What follows makes a fascinating tale.
